State Quarters

Here's an update on the state quarter program - They are everywhere! On a recent trip to Florida, I encountered them everywhere from toll booths to vending machines. Even in California, I have received quite a number of these in change, including the recently issued Georgia quarters. Looks like they are finally circulating. The premium price seen early do not seem as prominent anymore. Looks like the exception are those mint sewn bags. They were only available for a short period of time before they considered themselves sold out. A bag of 100 quarters purchased for $29.95 postpaid recently sold for about $130 on Ebay - Wow!

Mandalay Bay Museum

On a recent visit to Las Vegas, I was finally able to see the coins on display at the museum. While the museum is small, the quality of material they have there is overwhelming and quite impressive. I found it worth the $6 admission price, I am sure most collectors and even non-collectors would find it interesting as well. They give you something that you can punch up a code, and get the history of that coin or display. The exhibit featured the famous King of Siam proof set, prominently displayed in the middle of the room.

Long Beach Show

The three times a year Long Beach show will be held this coming week. I am trying to decide if I will be attending or not, but for those that do, hundreds of dealers await you, as well as seminars and meetings. See the press release below for information.

Hobby firsts at Long Beach Expo:

eBay and Amazon.com to host seminars BEP showcases new products

(Long Beach, CA) Two of the most prominent names in online communities, eBay and Amazon.com, have selected the upcoming Long Beach Coin & Collectibles Expo to conduct their first seminars held at a coin show. Both companies will host workshops for collectors, and eBay also will conduct

a session for collectibles dealers. The Expo will be held Thursday through Sunday, September 23 - 26, 1999, at the Long Beach, California Convention Center, 100 S. Pine Ave.,

"The importance of the Internet is rapidly growing in the buying and selling of collectibles. Some online companies have set up display booths at shows, but I’m honored that such influential companies as eBay and Amazon.com have selected the Long Beach Expo to conduct their first coin show seminars," said Expo General Chairman Ronald J. Gillio. Another major attraction at the September Long Beach show will be the always-popular "billion dollar display" by the U.S. Treasury Department’s

Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP). The exhibit includes series 1934 Gold Certificate $100,000 denomination notes.

This also will be the first time BEP will bring its new paper money products to the West Coast. Earlier this year, BEP began offering specially-produced $20 bills with unusually low serial numbers, as well as

other currency items for collectors.

"BEP is scheduled to be back in Long Beach in October 2000, but also decided this September’s show will be an excellent time and place to showcase its new products. And everyone loves the billion dollar exhibit," said Gillio.

Visitors to the show can learn how to buy and sell collectibles on the Internet with three seminars conducted by eBay and Amazon.com.At 8:00 a.m., Friday, September 24, Andrew Coleman, eBay’s Category Manager, will lead a seminar for collectibles dealers, "Using eBay To Grow Your Business.," and at 1:00 p.m., Amazon.com will host a public workshop, "On-line Auctions."

At 3:00 p.m., Saturday, September 25, Coleman, will lead a public seminar, "An Introductory Guide To Buying and Selling on eBay."More than a dozen collectors’ club meetings and educational seminars

will be held during the Long Beach Coin & Collectibles Expo, and three rare coin, currency and book auctions will be conducted by Heritage Numismatic Auctions of Dallas, Texas; Ponterio & Associates of San Diego, California; and George Frederick Kolbe Fine Numismatic Books of Crestline, California.

The show is hosted by the Long Beach Coin Club and Long Beach Stamp Club. Corporate sponsor participants include Professional Coin Grading Service; Numismatic Guaranty Corporation; Heritage Rare Coin Galleries; e-Bay; the Royal Canadian Mint; Amazon.com, and UBS Numismatics/Art Banking.

Admission is $4 (for a four- day pass), but free to anyone with a valid membership card from any coin or stamp club. Show hours are Thursday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
