On March 1st, the second of the quarter series was released officially. This is a state quarter commemorating Pennsylvania. As of March 7th, I’ve yet to receive a Delaware quarter in change here in Southern California. However, many reports exist from most states. I still anxiously search my change. I was fortunate to pick up a roll (at a modest premium) when I was at the FUN show in January. However, I did that only because I wanted to distribute the quarters to different people (I even gave 5 away here to readers of this newsletter last month) - I won’t pay above 25 cents for any future coins though, so I may have to wait a while to receive any more coins. Las Vegas Coin Show I was in Las Vegas this past weekend, and my visit coincided with a coin show held at the Plaza Hotel, Downtown. It was a hundred table show, and quite nice. I took my nine year old nephew with me, who has recently expressed an interest in collecting. I gave him a $10 budget to spend at the show, and he ended up with some nice coins. This was the first time I had taken a young numismatist, and I was really impressed with the dealers. We didn’t spend very much at their tables, but they took a lot of time to explain about the coins he purchased. They also reduced the price of every single item he purchased (and he made purchases from four different dealers) and even gave him some free items. When I was walking with him, I was explaining that some dealers will give things to kids free to encourage their collecting, as young collectors turn into adult collectors. While I was saying this, a dealer called him over and gave him a Buffalo nickel. We later went back and made a purchase from that table. Among the coins purchased for under $10 were an ancient Roman coin, 1799 and 1901 British pennies, World War II coins from East Africa and French Indo-China (Vietnam), a few modern coins from Italy, France, and Mexico, and a 1943 Steel penny in Uncirculated condition. Canadian Commemorative Quarters As I have mentioned in previous issues, Canada is also running a commemorative series of quarters. Twelve a year for two years. Unlike the US coins, a yearly set of 12 is available right now. I recently got the set I ordered, and it is quite beautiful in its display. It’s a nice addition to a collection, and it can be ordered from several dealers in print and on-line. You can also order directly from the Royal Canadian Mint, their web address is listed in a previous issue of this newsletter, check http://www.coinmall.com/ccw for that information.
