This included 308,000 Liberty Nickels, 488,000 Buffalo Nickels, and 950,000 Indian Head Cents. That’s 7.6 tons of coins, and something a collector accumulated over 25 years and stored in their house. It’s mind boggling to think of what that house must have been like. Part of this collection will be on display at the Florida FUN show, and some coins will even be given away as part of an educational presentation. I can just imagine what that person must have been like at a coin show, they had to have purchased everything in sight. There have been other famous hoards in history. One man named LaVere Redfield had four hundred bags of US Silver Dollars by the time he died in 1974. The coins he had were in spectacular condition, as they were taken from a bank and stored in a bag. When the collection was sold, it was a multi-million dollar sale. Most collectors can not afford nor want to hoard collect, but it makes interesting news when these collections are discovered. Look for hoarding in the near future of 25 cent pieces. With the 50 States Commemorative Program about to begin next month, I predict few of these coins will circulate long before they are pulled aside in mini-hoards by collectors and non-collectors.
