Free Coins and Information

There is an expectation that if something is on-line, it must
be free. This holds true to a certain extent with coin collecting.
There is a lot of information out there, and this week I will
devote the newsletter to finding out some of this information.

Based on the feedback that I am getting from the readers of this
newsletter, most of the readers are beginning collectors. Coin
collecting can be an overwhelming hobby, especially for a beginner.
The most important thing a collector can do is build their knowledge
base of a subject. It may seem overwhelming, but it is a lot of fun
to actually learn about what you are collecting, or what you want to
collect. Fortunately, there is a rather large amount of material to
choose from.

My first recommendation would be to subscribe to a magazine. The two
competing weeklies in the US are Coin World and Numismatic News.
Coin World offers a 26 issue subscription for only $15.97, and
this can be ordered on-line at:
http://www.collect.com/coinworld/cwmag/subscribe.html

Numismatic News offers a one year subscription for $29.98, and can
be ordered on-line at:
http://www.coinmall.com/magazines/

By the way, both magazines offer price guides for US Coins.

This is a low cost way to get aquatinted with the hobby. From there,
you can subscribe to another magazine, buy a catalog, etc. Many
people will tell you to buy the book before the coin, and I am
one who strongly believes this is a good idea. If you don't
know how much it is worth, how do you know what to pay? How
about winning some coins or currency? The internet provides an
excellent opportunity to win things. Below are some web sites
to check out, be sure to enter the contests.
