A MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT GRANT

By William Grant, CSNA President

First let me congratulate treasurer KAY LENKER on her recent reelection to the ANA’s Board of Governors.  If I’m not mistaken this is Kay’s third two year term.  And congratulations to HELEN CARMODY LEBO on her election as Vice-President of the ANA.  Both ladies leading us into the 21st Century.

I can’t get over how things have changed in numismatics over the past few years.  No longer do we rely on local coin dealers, coin shows, magazines or newspapers for numismatic  information.  The World-Wide-Web (www) has joined the ranks and in a very big way.  If you have a computer then you know what I’m saying.  But for those who have not purchased a computer yet, you will be in for a pleasant surprise.

Many, many dealers on are online with their own web sites and they don’t just sell coins but provide information as well.  California State Numismatic Association (www.coinmall.com/CSNA); The American Numismatic Association (www.money.org) and Numismatic Association of Southern California (home.earthlink.net/~beedon/nasc.htm) are just three organizations that have loads of numismatic information.

If you are interested in buying coins, etc. online there are a number of places that you can go to bid on auction items.  For example: eBay,  bid.com and Yahoo are just three places online and there are a number of others.

You can now place orders with the U S Mint through www.usmint.gov.  One advantage this year is that you don’t have to pay postage for the order placed over the internet, a savings of $3.95 on the purchase of U S Mint Sets or Proof Sets.

Krause Publications (www.krause.com) and Coin World (www.coinworld.com) are also online providing information to the collector.

Our hobby is a big winner with these electronic changes.  We are certainly wiser and we will become even more knowledgeable because of the www.  I for one love the internet and its changed my life for the better.

As for the Golden State Coin Show (GSCS) and CSNA Convention, held August 28 and 29, 1999.  A BIG THANK YOU to KAY LENKER and her committee for a job well done.  We will be seeing coverage on the show in the next issue.

Since our last CALCOIN NEWS we have launched another publication, THE COMMUNIQUE, put out by Vice-President RUTH PHILLIPS.  This publication is intended to inform member clubs of what is happening within CSNA.  Her recent two page issue gave an outstanding review of what to look forward to at GSCS.  Thanks Ruth.

Till next time. . . . . . . . Bill
